Design Production for Print/TASK 3//Print Finishes.

Researching various print finishes and effects for my packaging production work- to gain inspiration and insight to modern, contemporary design, and how this finishes are utilised within them. Considerations for my 'Design Production for Print' project, which can be found on my Design Practice blog- particularly for my current packaging design work.

BRANDING AND IDENTITY

FLOCKING

Innovative flocked and die- cut numerical invitation designs by Shiva Rad to celebrate the 6th collaboration of DB Platinum. Love the use of the bright, magenta spot colour against the matte black- a high impact, stylish, and luxuriously tactile design.

FOIL BLOCKING

http://www.behance.net/gallery/Low-Winter-Sun-Branding/246575

Stylish, minimal design for marketing consultancy company 'Low Winter Sun', by designer Loz Ives. The bold uppercase black foil-blocked typeface works in wonderful contrast between the vibrant orange stock used for branding materials and the business card design. A formal, business-like design, yet with a playful and "friendly" design aesthetic.

EMBOSSING

Creative publication and editorial design, and use of the emboss print finish technique helping to promote the collaboration between Okehampton College and wider communities for it's future (renewable energy, new technologies, etc) by designer Loz Ives. Great typeface- friendly, rounded and modern (sans serif)- a unique, simple, and effective design.

DEBOSSING

Greig Anderson's branding and identity logo and business card designs for 'Render'- an Architectural and CGI start-up company in Fife, Scotland. Specialising in renders and 3D drawings, this was reflected in their "building-blocks" logo- stylishly debossed and duplexed in their business cards with a contemporary two colour plus stock print- the bright orange working wonderfully in contrast to the matte black for a fun, yet professional visual outcome.

SPOT UV VARNISH

http://www.behance.net/gallery/Hidden-Creative-Business-cards/225652

A creative, high impact design by 'Hidden Creative' design studio for their self-promotional business cards. Printed onto 350gsm with UV Spot Varnish, their creative use of black varnish on the matte black card creates a play on words for their "hidden" name... revealing "hi" when seen in certain lights. Playful, fun and minimally designed, this creative concept is a great first impression for potential clients.

METALLIC SPOT COLOUR

Packaging print from one of my favourite beauty product ranges/brands 'Soap & Glory'. This high-end high street product utilises spot metallic colour print on it's well-known logo for a luxurious finish to represent the high quality of the ingredients and products inside their packaging. A small detail, but very effective- instantly communicates with the consumer that their products are luxurious and indulgent.

FLUORESCENT SPOT COLOUR

Design branding for Music and Audio Design company, Eskimo 7, by Design Studio October Design. Love the use of fluorescent spot colours with simple, minimal stationary for a bold, yet minimal design. Vibrant and visually engaging.

DIE CUT

Branding and promotional business cards for design company 'Fizz' for "Design straight up with a twist". Here, two Pantone spot colours and combined with luxurious heavy-weight stock, letterpress and a retro-style die cut for a truly unique, memorable piece of promotional material in the shape of a beer mat- there's no excuse not to be seen and heard! Wonderful concept, wonderful design.

PACKAGING AND PROMOTION

FLOCKING

Branding and Identity design by Graphic Designer and former LCA BAGD student, Ollie Sayward promoting concept Funk album 'Joints & Jams'. Ollie combines various design techniques such as duotone photography and hand-rendered typography to create this unique and luxurious design- though it is his raised flocking on canvas print cover that provides the most unique and memorable element of the design. Considered and stylish.

FOIL BLOCKING

Foil blocked business cards by Graphic Designer, Rheannon Cummings. The simple, yet stylish business cards and complete with Helvetica type, printed onto sustainable, recycled card, and finished with foil blocking for a luxurious contrast to the eco- friendly material onto which it is printed. Printed locally to her hometown, in Nottingham.

EMBOSSING

Beautiful calligraphic typography and considered print finishes help Annabelle Fiset to achieve a wonderful design with her Arborite Champagne Bottle packaging brief- a luxurious combination of embossing with foil blocking, in minimal one colour plus stock helps the design to stand out from other brands with a high-quality finish, with a wonderful mix of traditional elegance and modern design methods.

DEBOSSING

Litho printed business cards with debossed custom typeface by designer Marcus Erikkson. Love the stylish simplicity and the blind deboss- a real understated sophistication and considered print finish.

Debossed business cards created by designer Lawrence Brown for the managing director of 'Has Bean Coffee'- freshly roasted coffee bean retailers. The design is beautifully considered and minimal- the spot colour plus stock, simple, visually communicative logo and simple sans-serif typeface make for a modern, stylish and luxurious design.

SPOT UV VARNISH

The invitation for the 'Stages' Nike/Livestrong event (later shown on this post in 'publishing & editorial UV spot varnish'. The invitation follows the design consistency of the printed catalogue with a subtly stylish spot colour title cover box insert with complimentary Livestrong wrist band, and each individual invitation duplexed with yellow card, and screen printed with text for a tactile, considered, and consistently branded design.

METALLIC SPOT COLOUR

An example of metallic spot colour- here, utilised in the logo and typography to promote Jaume Plensa's exhibition at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, 2011. Discreet and simple, the metallic spot colour print adds a hint of luxury to where you may not normally expect it to be found (on a flyer)- adds a sense of importance and sophistication about the event.

FLUORESCENT SPOT COLOUR

Self-promotion, branding and identity printed media by LCA BAGD graduate, Will Asken. Here, Will has created a range of promotional materials- business cards, compliment slips and a letterhead using a clean, crisp and minimal aesthetic. The business cards, (featuring a fluorescent orange spot colour) are made from the duplex method of layering paper stocks for a well- finished card edge, as well as creating the consistent branding of a fluorescent orange reverse on aforementioned letterheads/compliment slips. Simple, effective, bold, and memorable.

PUBLISHING AND EDITORIAL

FLOCKING

An elegant and considered publication design by FLUID- creating the book, 'British Design Manual'. The cover consists of a flocked wallpaper design, and continues with printed monotone pattern design throughout the book. Cleverly taking inspiration from the Art & Craft's movement, and the wallpaper and surface pattern design of famed artist, William Morris- the jacket design is a nostalgic, tactile and sophisticated nod to all that is great in British interiors.

FOIL BLOCKING

Award-winning publication 'The Years Are Sailing By' documents the 50th Anniversary of Farstad Shipping ASA- the international supplier of offshore support vessels. Combined with beautiful colour plates and photographs, the cover boasts a minimal, considered foil blocking in elements of the title text. A gloriously considered book with a beautiful print finish.

EMBOSSING

http://www.behance.net/gallery/Schroders/1593479

Printed publication design by Design Studio 'The Potting Shed' for Schroders Private Bank- an illustrative guide to their history and values. Both the exterior and interior of the publication have a very traditional and conservative aesthetic, stylishly and luxuriously finished with an embossed foil-blocked cover to illustrate their high-quality service.

DEBOSSING

Debossed book cover for Fintan O'Toole's 'Enough is Enough', created by designer Bryan Johnston. Refreshing unique and minimal for a book cover, this design looks sophisticated and luxurious- a real "coffee table book". The green belly bind gives a good flash of colour whilst still maintaining a stylish and clean printed outcome.

SPOT UV VARNISH

Simple and stylish design by Eric Duvachelle for the Nike/Livestrong collaboration 'Stages'- a global art exhibition which encourages the raised awareness of cancer and cancer support. The printed catalogue of the event (image featured above) uses a spot UV varnish for the publication title for a simple, yet luxurious finish- adding quality and consideration to the design.

A selection of printed publications I own which incorporate spot UV varnishes onto the covers. Usually found on Graphic Design/Print manuals (where this effect is commonly found), the spot varnish adds the most subtle hint of luxury, and a high-quality finish to the publications.

METALLIC SPOT COLOUR

A sophisticated and somewhat luxurious metallic-print finish by Mission Design for their printed portfolio. The use of metallic spot colour is creatively used throughout the publication for a high-end and well-finished design, of course, resulting in a great first impression for prospective clients- the small details can go a long way.

Creative, conceptual publication by Designer Benoit Olive. A bold, high-impact design, in which simplicity is a necessity. The metallic spot colour of the front cover typography works wonderfully against the matte black of the cover, and compliments the metallic aluminium of the spray can concealed within the book.

FLUORESCENT SPOT COLOUR

The 2006/07 printed prospectus for Nottingham Trent University, designed by Andrew Townsend at Un.Titled. This crisp, considered design utilises spot colour print finishes with fluorescent typography on the publication's cover- a small feature which adds a hint of luxury with a sophisticated print outcome.

DIE CUT

Die cut printed publication design by James Flint for Falmouth College University Textiles Degree Catalogue 2011. A creative pattern cut which reflects the pattern-making design of the students, with the green sheet of paper reflective of the playful personalities on the course.
A unique and visually considered, attractive outcome.
