A few videos that have caught my interest- without the brief (until tomorrow!) I don't want to start researching too much so I don't veer off the specific path, but good ideas to get me excited about the outcome possibilities- although, as aforementioned, I don't know much about what it yet to come though I know I would really like to try my hand at pixelation, stop motion and hand-rendered animation- forms of design I'm quite passionate about and feel I'd really like to try and progress with- digital and screen-based outcomes that I could image working with in my own contemporary design practice.

Research//Business card designs.
Researching some more business card designs for inspiration for developing and re-vamping my own business cards to be more fitting to my design practice and contemporary methods of print-based production. Around this time, I am also developing four business cards for freelance commisions, so look for further creative inspiration in this field.
For my own business cards I aspire to create something innovative, creative, professional, yet also playful- a style of work which I think is pretty consistent in my portfolio- I don't like work which takes itself too seriously.

Brilliant visual communication. Simple and playful- done.
LOVE this idea- so unique and a great use of materials- really thinking creatively here. Very distinctive and visually communicative. Just my cup of tea.
Fun use of kirby grips (or bobby pins, for those in the US!) on these business cards advertising for a hairdressing and make up artistry service. Again, showcasing how the simplist ideas can often be the most effective.
So simple- it's amazing what a fold can do. So perfect for the design name. Great thinking.
Brilliant use of alternative substrates here- something completely new and diverse to what you would usually find from a business card, yet still in keeping with the standardised 55mm x 85mm size format, which ensures that it is still visually connected or representative of a business card, and not unrecognised
as serving this particular function.
Again, another great example of an interactive business card- very engaging and would, of course, be very memorable for the recipient- unusual and innovative.
Love the fluorescent spot colour used in this card along with the perforated tag- showcasing the duplexed paper- would love to create something like this- fun, engaging, interactive yet still really edgy and a minimalist design layout. Very cool.
Can't get enough of the print finishes. Cool design- great use of scrape foil (yes, this isn't the right word, I'm sure- but scratch card foil material, you catch my drift)- could have a really fun, innovative and witty play on words- perhaps making a range of business cards with several messages- almost creating a
"collectability" about them?
BRILLIANT idea- here, the teeth embossed design shown like an impression performed and created at the dentist (often used for making molds for retainers and braces, etc)- perhaps a little too in contrast with the traditional type and layout for my liking- would have kept it a bit more minimal- though great design nonetheless.
Again- interesting stock choice- unique and memorable- the rounded corners adds an interesting detail too- looks very considered and well-made.
Gorgeous use of illustrative type combined with image- and on wonderful metallic stock too. Really sexy designs- loving the rounded corners. Full of consideration and curvature. Yum.
Hooray! The style of business card I just love- fun, fun, fun. Brilliant idea- a wordsearch for finding the important stats and data of the designer. I want something like this please! Fun, engaging, interactive and memorable.
Brilliant concept and ideas portrayed through this business card- along with, of course, a wonderful deboss print finish that, combined with textured stock and a one-colour print is pretty hard to resist. Love the vintage, circus- esque style- really unique and fun.
Chic and simple- can't resist the combination of italicised font and spot colours. I am your slave- and monochrome too, always reliable. Great design- contemporary and professional.

Good Is//Design Production for Print//Festival Branding.
A quick research and image source for existing Festival branding. Really wish that I'd looked into more generalised branding for Festivals at an earlier stage in my project- perhaps film was too niche/cliche? I found myself stuck in a rut a lot- so I'm sure this would have helped.

For more work and to see this design in context, see my Design Practice blog for more details.Love the colours used in this design- fresh and contemporary, whilst still communicating a vibe of the guitar's 1960's heyday with the cool blue tones and rounded stock, reminiscent of some of the hand-rendered typefaces commonly associated with Festivals such as Woodstock and Glastonbury.
Simple, bold vector imagery- straight to the point and informative. Perhaps a little too vague in terms of design for what I'm proposing for my own hypothetical Wes Anderson film festival, but good use of minimal spot colours and variations of format and composition- interesting series of printed media.
Beautiful gradient metallic inks used in a screen print style on these posters- really interesting and unique design outcome- unfortunately can't see too much detail in the low-res image- but great series of colours- each poster their own unique outcome, yet still visually communicative as a set due to the repeat pattern size,
page format, and composition.
Simple typographic design- the dark grey and lighter tone grey background perhaps a little too dark for my liking, but it works well against the vibrant green. Fun, rounded typeface- visually communicative of the spirit of St. Patrick's Day- lively, playful and unique in it's spirit.
Great use, once more of minimal spot colours and tints used throughout this printed publication- with a combination of type, image, and infographic design. The green combined with the recycled card stock for the cover and back bind work well to communicate the design's environmental policy and ethos- a traditional and distinctive combination of stocks and colours.
The simple pictograms work really well to communicate the message in a memorable, insightful, yet contemporary and modern way- translates to both adults and children in terms of visual communication, so covers a wide audience and target market.
Bold, colourful photographic imagery works wonderfully with the deconstructed, inventive typographic layout- bold, high impact design- though simple and very communicative- easily translated and understood.
Love the colour combinations used in this printed flyer and promotional media for a Frehser's event in Glasgow- the combination of the bold vector imagery and typographic layout makes for a really high-impact and memorable design reminisant of 1980's geometric patterns and electric feel.

Good Is//Design Production for Print//Ideal stocks.
Researching ideal stocks to use for the printed promotional materials for the hypothetical Wes Anderson Film Festival at The Hyde Park Picture House (see my Design Practice blog for more context and
design developments).

(NB: In most situations, the printer will either order in stock, or already have it on the presmis- though I felt it important to specify the realism of ordering stock and possible wholesalers available- both for this project and for future reference)
Originally intending for my designs to be printed onto "ice white" stock, I have found, since experimenting with newsprint and cartridge stocks that this off-white colour is far more appropriate for my subtle, "art house" aesthetic- the more minimal and environmental the better- showcasing the style of Wes' films in balance with their substance.

For this project, I originally bought some extra-light weight bible paper for intention to use for the mailshot booklet, but found for digital printing it was around 40gsm too light even for the EPSON digital printers at Uni, let alone my Canon Inkjet. However, in a professional print environment this high quantity unit number (see above) would warrant lithography printing, so would be a feesable process to print on this weight of stock.
The bible paper offers stylish, yet subtle sophistication- giving the book a really high-end and delicate feeling- emoting the rarity and specialty of the event with it's considered and unique choice of stock.

Good Is//Design Production for Print//Printers in Leeds.
Looking for printers in Leeds- not only due to it being the 4th largest industry in the city, but also because of the location of the Picture House itself- a close proximity to the printers would allow a good working relationship and ease of contact/visit, as well as keeping delivery costs to a minimum- something that the Picture House, being an independent body (and supported by Leeds City Council) would certainly look for within their printed media.
Also blogging ideal choices of stock and ability to print with them- how I would, given more time/finances have chosen to use in my final printed outcomes.

Great information from Redcliffe printers- use 120gsm blue backed stock for their billboard prints- and give a wide variety of prices and quotes available dependent on size requirements- as well as giving advice on the resolution and file size of images, etc.
Unfortunately not a Leeds-based company, but Bristol obviously still within the UK- and for minimal orders (cost effectiveness of printing and advertising would be kept low to ensure that profits were still gained by The Picture House) the delivery costs would also be kept low.

Colour copy Leeds are local, economical and boast a low carbon footprint- works well in keeping for the The Picture House unique and independent. art house ethos- digital print suppliers are reasonably easy to source within Leeds- see more information below.
Offer high-end as well as budget prints- suited for the Hyde Park Picture House budget and limited print run... few examples below- obviously not ideal stock, but this would, I'm sure, be negotiable.
Local printers, boasting high-end design- as well as a range of print methods and finishes all under one roof (and company)- a rarity in contemporary professional print. Range of formats, scales and stocks vary greatly, and, of course, can produce a wide variety of spot colours- up to two in a single print run (none of my outcomes have more than one spot colour per design).
Printing such a minimal amount of designs at a company like Team, however, would be costly in such a high-end environment- much more suited to mailshot promotional material as opposed to the outdoor advertising.
Although specialising in more difficult-to-print substrates and materials, such as plastics, acetates, etc, they also provided a standard digital and litho print service- again, with local credentials- thus, keeping costs to a minimum.
Again, a local print company (which one third of the Graphic Design BA group visited on our recent printer trips)- well-established, long running company- reliable, environmental (FSC certification), etc.
