Good Is//Design Production for Print//Festival Branding.

A quick research and image source for existing Festival branding. Really wish that I'd looked into more generalised branding for Festivals at an earlier stage in my project- perhaps film was too niche/cliche? I found myself stuck in a rut a lot- so I'm sure this would have helped.
My bad.
For more work and to see this design in context, see my Design Practice blog for more details.

Love the colours used in this design- fresh and contemporary, whilst still communicating a vibe of the guitar's 1960's heyday with the cool blue tones and rounded stock, reminiscent of some of the hand-rendered typefaces commonly associated with Festivals such as Woodstock and Glastonbury.

Simple, bold vector imagery- straight to the point and informative. Perhaps a little too vague in terms of design for what I'm proposing for my own hypothetical Wes Anderson film festival, but good use of minimal spot colours and variations of format and composition- interesting series of printed media.

Beautiful gradient metallic inks used in a screen print style on these posters- really interesting and unique design outcome- unfortunately can't see too much detail in the low-res image- but great series of colours- each poster their own unique outcome, yet still visually communicative as a set due to the repeat pattern size,
page format, and composition.

Simple typographic design- the dark grey and lighter tone grey background perhaps a little too dark for my liking, but it works well against the vibrant green. Fun, rounded typeface- visually communicative of the spirit of St. Patrick's Day- lively, playful and unique in it's spirit.

Great use, once more of minimal spot colours and tints used throughout this printed publication- with a combination of type, image, and infographic design. The green combined with the recycled card stock for the cover and back bind work well to communicate the design's environmental policy and ethos- a traditional and distinctive combination of stocks and colours.
The simple pictograms work really well to communicate the message in a memorable, insightful, yet contemporary and modern way- translates to both adults and children in terms of visual communication, so covers a wide audience and target market.

Bold, colourful photographic imagery works wonderfully with the deconstructed, inventive typographic layout- bold, high impact design- though simple and very communicative- easily translated and understood.

Love the colour combinations used in this printed flyer and promotional media for a Frehser's event in Glasgow- the combination of the bold vector imagery and typographic layout makes for a really high-impact and memorable design reminisant of 1980's geometric patterns and electric feel.

Good Is//Design Production for Print//Ideal stocks.

Researching ideal stocks to use for the printed promotional materials for the hypothetical Wes Anderson Film Festival at The Hyde Park Picture House (see my Design Practice blog for more context and
design developments).

Due to time/finance and print constraints I was unfortunately unable to print on the stocks that I may have liked to reach the full design potential for this brief, however, here I will blog all stocks I would have liked to use for my outcomes, given more time and flexibility within the project.

LIST OF [FINAL] OUTCOMES:

- 48 sheet billboard advertising
- 6 sheet bus shell advertising
- 4 sheet train station advertising
- Mailshot presentation box
- Mailshot slip cover
- Hotdog film booklets
- 320mmx320mm pocket map
- Belly binds
- Mailshot Film Festival Booklet

(NB: In most situations, the printer will either order in stock, or already have it on the presmis- though I felt it important to specify the realism of ordering stock and possible wholesalers available- both for this project and for future reference)

Originally intending for my designs to be printed onto "ice white" stock, I have found, since experimenting with newsprint and cartridge stocks that this off-white colour is far more appropriate for my subtle, "art house" aesthetic- the more minimal and environmental the better- showcasing the style of Wes' films in balance with their substance.

48 SHEET BILLBOARD ADVERTISING

TYPE OF PRINT: DIGITAL
UNITS: 1x48 SHEET
STOCK: 120GSM OFF WHITE/IVORY NEWSPRINT

Paper to be sourced from printers- too large from standard retailer for delivery affordability. 48 Sheet is cut down and pasted onto billboards with a mid-weight stock, (120GSM)- each board (12) cut down to 1016x1524mm (40x60 inches).
The heavier paper weight ensures that image quality can be retained post-paste and is more resilient to weathering and tear.

OTHER EXAMPLES OF 120GSM BILLBOARDS

6 SHEET BUS SHELL ADVERTISING

TYPE OF PRINT: Digital
UNITS: 3
STOCK: 120GSM OFF WHITE BULKY NEWSPRINT

An example of the type of stock- not quite large enough for the intented promotional purpose (would need to be at least 1000mm x 1500mm for 6 sheet)- though an idea of the stock- would, most likely, be available to order in at a commercial printers in the professional print stage.

MAILSHOT FILM FESTIVAL BOOKLET

TYPE OF PRINT: LITHO PRINTING
UNITS: 771 UNITS APPROX (257 SEATS AT HPPH X6 (NIGHT) / 50%)
STOCK: 50GSM OFF WHITE/IVORY BIBLE PAPER

For this project, I originally bought some extra-light weight bible paper for intention to use for the mailshot booklet, but found for digital printing it was around 40gsm too light even for the EPSON digital printers at Uni, let alone my Canon Inkjet. However, in a professional print environment this high quantity unit number (see above) would warrant lithography printing, so would be a feesable process to print on this weight of stock.

The bible paper offers stylish, yet subtle sophistication- giving the book a really high-end and delicate feeling- emoting the rarity and specialty of the event with it's considered and unique choice of stock.

Duotone women's own magazine- love the minimal colours- the sort of design I took as inspiration for my own work for the Design Production for Print brief (see my Design Practice blog for further information).

Good Is//Design Production for Print//Printers in Leeds.

Researching specific printers in Leeds that could provide the services for my specific print outcomes for the 'Good Is' project- the hypothetical Wes Anderson Film Festival at The Hyde Park Picture House (more information and work can be found on my Design Practice blog).
Looking for printers in Leeds- not only due to it being the 4th largest industry in the city, but also because of the location of the Picture House itself- a close proximity to the printers would allow a good working relationship and ease of contact/visit, as well as keeping delivery costs to a minimum- something that the Picture House, being an independent body (and supported by Leeds City Council) would certainly look for within their printed media.

Also blogging ideal choices of stock and ability to print with them- how I would, given more time/finances have chosen to use in my final printed outcomes.

LIST OF [FINAL] OUTCOMES:

- 48 sheet billboard advertising
- 6 sheet bus shell advertising
- 4 sheet train station advertising
- Mailshot presentation box
- Mailshot slip cover
- Hotdog film booklets
- 320mmx320mm pocket map
- Belly binds
- Mailshot Film Festival Booklet

*Choice of stock to be kept [reasonably] consistent with other promotional print materials- both for outdoor advertising and mailshot delivery.

OUTCOME: 48 SHEET BILLBOARD ADVERTISING
STOCK: 120GSM BULKY NEWSPRINT/CARTIDGE
PRINT METHOD: DIGITAL (LOW QUANTITY PRINT)
NUMBER OF UNITS: 1x48 SHEET

Great information from Redcliffe printers- use 120gsm blue backed stock for their billboard prints- and give a wide variety of prices and quotes available dependent on size requirements- as well as giving advice on the resolution and file size of images, etc.
Unfortunately not a Leeds-based company, but Bristol obviously still within the UK- and for minimal orders (cost effectiveness of printing and advertising would be kept low to ensure that profits were still gained by The Picture House) the delivery costs would also be kept low.

More billboard printers:

[INFORMATION RELEVANT TO BOTH FORMS OF ADVERTISING]

http://www.colourcopyleeds.co.uk/

Colour copy Leeds are local, economical and boast a low carbon footprint- works well in keeping for the The Picture House unique and independent. art house ethos- digital print suppliers are reasonably easy to source within Leeds- see more information below.

Offer high-end as well as budget prints- suited for the Hyde Park Picture House budget and limited print run... few examples below- obviously not ideal stock, but this would, I'm sure, be negotiable.

Local, well-established printers- specialising in both digital and Litho print- the two forms of print that would be used in my design outcomes.

Local printers, boasting high-end design- as well as a range of print methods and finishes all under one roof (and company)- a rarity in contemporary professional print. Range of formats, scales and stocks vary greatly, and, of course, can produce a wide variety of spot colours- up to two in a single print run (none of my outcomes have more than one spot colour per design).
Printing such a minimal amount of designs at a company like Team, however, would be costly in such a high-end environment- much more suited to mailshot promotional material as opposed to the outdoor advertising.

Although specialising in more difficult-to-print substrates and materials, such as plastics, acetates, etc, they also provided a standard digital and litho print service- again, with local credentials- thus, keeping costs to a minimum.

http://www.duffieldprinters.co.uk/

Again, a local print company (which one third of the Graphic Design BA group visited on our recent printer trips)- well-established, long running company- reliable, environmental (FSC certification), etc.

OUTCOME: MAILSHOT PRESENTATION BOX
STOCK: 200GSM REINFORCED CARTRIDGE
PRINT METHOD: LITHOGRAPHIC
NUMBER OF UNITS: APPROX 771

A reinforced cartridge paper- to still provide the tactile texture and off-white colouring- more "indie" and art house in it's aesthetic and print outcome than a pure white, but still able to withstand postal delivery without too great a risk of damage.

OUTCOME: MAILSHOT SLIP COVER
STOCK: 140GSM OFF WHITE CARTRIDGE
PRINT METHOD: LITHOGRAPHIC
NUMBER OF UNITS: APPROX 771

As previously mentioned, local, high-end design printers- having visited Team print during this design module, I was able to see their print production methods- and learn more about their in-house print finishing (a rarity to offer all stages of print under one company)- not only could they print the design, but they could also die cut and emboss the packaging for finish.

OUTCOME: HOTDOG FILM BOOKLETS
STOCK: 140GSM OFF WHITE CARTRIDGE
PRINT METHOD: LITHOGRAPHIC
NUMBER OF UNITS: APPROX 771 [x6 (ONE PER FILM- SEPERATE SPOT COLOURS/PRINT RUNS)= 4,626]

Minimal pages within the hotdog booklet- want to keep the same tactile texture but still reinforced (mid weight cartridge stock) to ensure that poster can be securely unfolded and stuck onto wall if the recipient requires/wants. **

OUTCOME: BELLY BINDS
STOCK: 140GSM OFF WHITE CARTRIDGE
PRINT METHOD: LITHOGRAPHIC
NUMBER OF UNITS: APPROX 5397 [ 771 x6 (ONE PER FILM- SEPERATE SPOT COLOURS/PRINT RUNS)= 4,626] PLUS 1 PER MAP DESIGN (4626 + 771= 5397)
OUTCOME: 320x320MM POCKET MAP
STOCK: 140GSM OFF WHITE CARTRIDGE
PRINT METHOD: LITHOGRAPHIC
NUMBER OF UNITS: APPROX 771

** See details above- needed to be kept rigid and flat when unfolded- easy to read and use for attendees of the Film Festival- potentially on the move.

OUTCOME: MAILSHOT FILM FESTIVAL BOOKLET
STOCK: 50GSM OFF WHITE/IVORY BIBLE PAPER (contents)
PRINT METHOD: LITHOGRAPHIC
NUMBER OF UNITS: APPROX 771

Unusual, one-off stock in the series helps to ensure that the booklet is regarded as the "stand out" piece within the mailshot delivery pack- considered, tactile, delicate- still works within the series of other stocks, yet remains a single information and persuasive source of printed promotional design in it's own right.

-SEE LIST OF PRINTERS ABOVE FOR POSSIBLE CONTACTS FOR PROFESSIONAL PRINT WITHIN LEEDS & THE UK-

* I would have liked to have had the opportunity to experiment with more printing methods in accordance to varying print outcomes, however, time and concept restrictions has held me back from being able to see this through. Other print examples including: RISO, Flexography, Gravure, etc.

Sources and sites with useful information, facts and maps to/about the Hyde Park Picture House, the art house cinema where my hypothetical Wes Anderson Film Festival shall be held. Need to trace this map for my mailshot booklet! NOTE TO SELF!

Design Production for Print//Film Festival Posters.

Looking at, and researching specific film posters in order to (hopefully) inspire designs for my Design Production for Print project (see my Design Practice blog for more details) in creating promotional designs for the hypothetical Wes Anderson Film Festival.

Love the aqua colour and the bold vector style- this is how illustration SHOULD be done- I'm just worried that I won't have quite enough time to see this sort of style through.

Beautifully elegant and sophisticated- much like the aura of the Cannes Film Festival Itself. The metallic gold spot colour works wonderfully with the monochrome here, really pops out and adds a sense of regality.

A little bit crazy. Interesitng minimalistic take on the design and layout- mine will certainly have to have a few more details than this in order to promote the Festival, and to portray required information.

Love the one spot colour- this works so well here- interesting layout and format too. White always, in my opinion, works so much better with colour than black- keeps it looking fresh, vibrant and crisp.

A bit too rough and ready for me- but I like the typeface engulfing the page- looks really high-impact and would certainly be eye-catching to a passer-by.

Love how mad this really is. Sure, it's appropriate for the Futuristic Film Festival, but perhaps not with The Wes Anderson Film Festival (films of which have more than a little tendency to flirt with 1970's stylings)- fun use of hand-rendered illustration, not very commonly seen in contemporary graphic design, so pretty refreshing.

Quite Saul Bass like in it's paper-cut like style. Fun colours and an engaging way to attract attention with the type part of the illustrative design.

Again- love the colour palette. So simple in design, but the vibrancy really makes it stand out to be something quite extraordinary. I don't think it would be doable considering the time (but I'll definitely have a go!), but a style like this would make a brilliant poster/programme design cover.

Perhaps my favourite poster from the blog (might be to do with a Lynchian love?)- fun and simple composition- the type also creating a sense of playfulness and the (CLICHE ALERT!) "thinking outside the box" that Lynch is so well known for in his films- yet the black and white helps to ensure the design is kept minimal and sophisticated.

Design Production for Print//Film School Mailing List.

Today I had a bit of a brainwave- when considering my mailshot items, I knew that my existing mailing list was both a) far too minimal and b) far too "elite". Whilst I had purely aimed my focus at those already in the film industry, and critics, I wasn't truly looking to my target audience- film lovers, and particularly young film lovers- those who would be most attracted to the substance and stylings of Wes' films. Therefore, I decided to take a look at film schools and courses around the UK- and could address to these institutes a mailshot each in order to promote to a far wider market (all of their enrolled students)- whilst still keeping costs down
(if this brief were to be live).
More information about my mailshot designs, and my design production for print project can be found on my Design Practice blog.

Never did I think I would return- but I came back to the UCAS website- a great way for filtering information about specific University courses, and was really pleased by the results I sourced. The addresses below are new additions to my student-based mailing list.
In some instances I have also considered joint courses such as psychology, drama, and screenwriting, as I feel these are all integral interests to really appreciate a Wes Anderson film.

77 MAILSHOTS TO SEND (phew)... would be an interesting test to work out costs (post print) to see whether this would be financially viable in terms of seating and sales at the Hyde Park Picture House- whether a profit could still be made on ticket sales, etc.
