Design Practice II//Product/Range/Distribution//Colour palette inspiration.

Yesterday, I found this cover design on a tumblr fairy tales blog (which has proved great for resources and inspiration) for a book of Russian Fairy Tales. I think the simple, vector-like design style and minimal colour palette for the cover works incredibly well, and, given my time on the project again, I would have much preferred to have made illustrative designs like these with a charming, folk, Eastern-European illustrative graphic style.  Really cool style, and far more focused than the illustrative style I'm currently working on (see my Design Practice blog for current progress and design developments).

Design Practice II//Product/Range/Distribution//Book Packaging designs.

Researching printed book packaging which has particularly caught my eye throughout my search during this project. 
Given my time again on the project, I would have liked to work with far more creative, and conceptual designs, something that I was originally planning with my papercut designs, but throughout crit sessions, and due, again, to time constraints, it was a process which wouldn't have been entirely necessary. 
Some really creative designs here, which all effectively visually communicate the particular content of the books- I love the golf design with the golf ball inside. Really minimal, simple, yet truly original and innovative design outcomes. Some great stuff!

Design Practice II//Product/Range/Distribution//Various Packaging.

Researching a multitude of packaged products for a variety of different products, with both decorative and minimal design outcomes, and really just looking for designs that particularly appeal to me. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, I feel as though I have compromised a great deal with my packaging designs, and in general, my entire outcome range. However, given more time, I certainly would have liked to have worked with something a little more innovative and creative that would particularly appeal to my target audience (schoolchildren aged 9-11).

Design Practice II//Product/Range/Distribution//Reading Posters in Schools.

Looking at a few quick examples of poster designs to promote reading within schools to children. Although A LOT of heinously bad designs were found, these three shown were a few of the hidden gems, which show the effectiveness in simplicity in communicating a message. I think the illustrative style really helps to be eye-catching and engaging, along with the bright colour palettes used (definitely glad that I moved on to working with colour now- using black and white now feels like such a silly mistake!). Hopefully tonight I can work on putting my promotional poster design together, and, again, keeping it consistent to the rest of the 200 Books 200 Schools Grimms Fairy Tales printed and web-based designs.

Design Practice II//Product/Range/Distribution//Fairy Tale Posters.

Researching a few quick examples of existing posters for Fairy Tale- themed films and classic stories. Generally, the designs are kept quite minimal, with more decorative detailing in the type and colour palettes used throughout.

With my own poster design, I intend to work in promoting the 200 Books 200 Schools range, as well as specifically focusing on the designs for The Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm for the September product range. On the website, I will produce a more generalised promotion of the reading scheme, but I feel that this will be a good opportunity to keep the products consistent, and show the versatility of products that can be made from a more focused design outcome. Design Practice II//Product/Range/Distribution//Layout Design Inspiration.

One of my favourite sources of inspiration throughout this project has been the Taschen publication of The Fairy Tales of The Brothers Grimm, with it's wonderfully considered type and illustrative designs throughout.


In this project, designing the edition of the book has been something quite new to me, with little experience with editorial design before, and all the help and inspiration I could get would, of course, be really helpful. With a good balance of illustrative designs and body copy, I felt that this would be a good source to work from in terms of how effectively these designs are combined.


Not such a fan of wrap around images, although I really like the flooded page illustration designs, and this is something I will definitely pursue within my own designs. For further details and design developments, see my Design Practice blog.

Discovered a new favourite designer tonight in the form of talented US-based illustrator Rebekka Seale. Her delicate, hand-rendered style has really inspired me for my own designs for the illustrative additions to my '200 Books 200 Schools' (Grimms) project, though I will perhaps create something a little darker to match the theme and content of the book. Some really beautiful designs and great colours used, I'll definitely be keeping an eye on her work in the future.

After feedback from yesterday's crit session, and the decision to move on to working with colour illustrations, I decided to take a look on the Puffin website, to see how effectively my designs would translate over to their site.
Originally, I wanted to use the silhouette B&W style to stand out as a range, and to be unique, though I see clearly that the Puffin site is for children, and is bright and colourful as a result. Inspired by a link to the 'Puffin Classics'range, I went on to look at some of the illustrative covers, where black and white illustrations are primarily used (love the Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan covers by Chris Riddell- he was one of my favourite illustrators whilst at college) with the addition of a spot colour or two. Definitely something worth considering within my own outcomes and design practice.

Design Practice II//Product/Range/Distribution//Schools in the UK.

As part of my research for the 200 books for 200 schools promotional campaign within schools, I have decided to research 200 (of the 209) regions within the UK to propose that the books are distributed at, although I would  propose that the actual process per region is on a sign-up basis (where schools can volunteer/appeal for the scheme). I have chosen the 200/209 based on size of the region, and schools within the local area.

The school proposed for each of the sections are chosen on a ratings system, just in this circumstance, with the highest review rated schools selected for the promotional distribution (If the same ratings are shown, it will be the first alphabetical name choice).
